Unique Training for Emerging Musicians

You've found a unique opportunity to study music and performance in NYC and Fairfield county, Connecticut.  Multi-instrumentalist and singer Dave Edwards is a gifted teacher who uses recording as a learning tool to coach singer-songwriters. Dave also offers lessons on electric and upright bass, drums, acoustic guitar, piano, and voice. Do you record your own songs? If so, you're in good company! More and more up-and-coming musicians are learning this important skill while (in many cases) playing multiple instruments. Students gain a deep understanding about their craft and themselves when recording is part of the musician / coach experience.  If this sounds like an inspiring and unique training environment for you or someone you know, continue reading.  And if you like, scroll down a bit to chat or to e-mail Dave.  45/60 min. private lessons are in mid-town Manhattan, Greenwich CT, and to your home in Fairfield county, CT.

unique training for emerging musicians

Hi! I'm Dave Edwards, a professional multi-instrumentalist, singer and music coach in the NYC metro area living in Fairfield county, CT.  During the past 20 years I've coached over 100 musicians in private lessons, group settings, over the past 8 years as worship & arts director at Trinity Church in Greenwich, CT, and as an adjunct professor at Nyack College in NYC.

I understand how standard pedagogy serves musicians and at the same time can lose creatives (especially teenagers) who may not see themselves in standard study tracks. I have a passion for students who are trying to find their place as creative musicians, while working to prepare them technically and mentally for (as violin great Issac Stern once wrote to me and underlined)

"a happy life in music".

What's unique about the MusicianNYC teaching approach?

-MNYC students think about their motivations to clarify relevant goals

(personal motivation)

-MNYC prepares students with key skills for musical collaboration

(a future in their musical community)

-MNYC uses recording as a learning tool

(real-time feedback for tone, pitch, rhythm, dynamics, style & phrasing)

-MNYC coaches pros, future music majors, intermediates & beginners

(courses that can scale)

While fundamentals remain, musicianship and methods are evolving.

I see a thriving, creative & collaborative future on the horizon in our region.

Let's prepare for it!

music teacher, coach, multi-instrumentalist and singer Dave Edwards

Below are tracks of study booked in groups of 15 lessons. One may be just right for you! However, some musicians are on a path that may require a unique approach. I'd be happy to talk with you about hybrid approaches with emphasis on and incorporation of ear training, theory, lessons on multiple instruments and recording techniques. Perhaps you are a parent of a student needing instruction, or parent of a student getting ready for college auditions, or who may want to produce a recording for senior project. Curious about possibilities?

Singer - Songwriters

I love helping singer/songwriters reach their potential as performers. Sessions can be recorded on-site in Pro Tools, so students get real-time feedback & recording experience with every session. This study track is geared toward rock, pop, folk and jazz styles and are 45 or 60 minute lessons. Bookings of 15 lessons @ $85/$105 ea. are paid in 4 monthly installments. Have a friend you want to perform, sing, or play with? Split the cost of the lessons!

Dave Edwards drummer and multi-instrumentalist

Drum Lessons

Dave studied at the IU School of Music as a percussion major and at William Paterson University as a jazz drummer. His drumming helped his band win the Berklee School of Music High School Jazz band competition as well as winning outstanding drummer and bassist award playing both instruments on the song “Whiplash” under the band director who’s story inspired the movie of the same name. 45 /60 min lessons available. Bookings of 15 lessons @ $85/$105 ea. paid in 4 monthly installments.

Acoustic Guitar Lessons

Dave has played acoustic guitar in live bands regularly over 20 years in the folk-rock style. Dave’s strength as a guitarist is backing up singers and fronting a band as a singer and acoustic guitarist. If you're looking to play songs, backup a singer, or perhaps want to learn to improvise and jam with other musicians, this course may suit you. 45 /60 min lessons available. Bookings of 15 lessons @ $85/$105 ea. paid in 4 monthly installments.

Upright & Electric Bass

Mr. Edwards is a world-class in-demand bass player in the NYC metro area. Lesson emphasis would be on basic technique on the instrument coupled with the concept of “serving the song” well by crafting bass parts with tone sculpting that support other musicians in various popular styles. Focus on jazz, pop, rock, improvising, groove music.
“Dave, do you have any more students?” (jazz great Rufus Reid, inquiring about more bass students for the prestigious William Paterson University jazz school.) 45 /60 min lessons available.
Bookings of 15 lessons @ $85/$105 ea. paid in 4 monthly installments.

Piano Keys

Piano Lessons

If you're looking to play songs, accompany yourself as you sing, or go a more traditional route, I'd love to help! Before working as a jazz and pop multi-instrumentalist, I was a piano performance major at Indiana University School of Music, having performed as featured soloist playing Rhapsody in Blue with the Trenton Symphony in New Jersey and had honorable mentions in 3 Young-Keyboardist-Association international piano competitions. 45 /60 min lessons available. Bookings of 15 lessons @ $85/$105 ea. paid in 4 monthly installments.

"Dave is not only an extremely accomplished musician, but also an excellent role model, mentor and teacher who continually seeks to encourage those around him to be the best they can be. I know of very few musicians who are as well-rounded, while maintaining a wonderful mix of humility and concern for others."

Lisa Prokopowitz, MT-BC, ACC (music therapist, songwriter, performer)

"Dave Edwards is easily the most gifted multi instrumentalist I have ever heard. In addition to a remarkably rich and moving tenor voice, any band would be lucky to have him as their sole Drummer, Guitarist, Pianist or Bassist. To be able to play brilliantly on both a conceptual and technical level on four separate and demanding instruments and also play well on fiddle, dulcimer and other instruments is a marvel to behold."

Rob Mathes, producer/arranger (Sting / Springsteen / Lou Reed / Yo-Yo Ma / Renee Flemming)
